It’s a Christmas movie! It’s an Action/Adventure movie! It’s a Dark Comedy…According to IMDB, it’s many films at once. But one thing’s for certain: it’s a trendsetter, a template for action films that have followed it.

We’ve all seen this film; it’s become a part of our cultural lexicon. Like A Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, and A Christmas Story, many of us watch this film during the appropriate time of year.

I watched it because of a meme.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, although many of the film's tropes are incredibly dated. If you used all of the hair gel and Aqua Net the actors used in the film, a small town’s atmosphere would become sticky. I’m so glad that we, as a culture, have transcended viewing women as objects. And of course, there’s the inherent violence in the film. The villains could not have reached their goal without a body count. One would think that such an organized, educatedand clever thief like Hans Gruber would have created a plan that included as little collateral damage as possible.

Did I mention that this film was dated?

All the naked women prancing around and having simulated sex on HBO/Max and Showtime and other premium cable channels? Kanye West's deplorable "dressing" of his wives in the name of "fashion"? Objectification of women hasn't ended. Objectification of women is alive and well. The main difference is that these days, women know they're going to be objectified, so they…
