I’ve always admired Jim Butcher as an author and as a worldbuilder because he artfully and deftly outdoes himself with each book of The Dresden Files Series. Twelve Months: The Dresden Files Book 18 is just such an example. Especially considering Battle Ground, the previous book, and the stakes, conflicts, and resolutions therein. Chicago was almost destroyed in that last book. How does an author come back from, and actually outdo, such an episode?

Harry Dresden, narrator and main character of TM and the entire series, is grieving and in pain. This book, as indicated in the title, chronicles Harry’s recovery process while also introducing continued worldbuilding and engaging conflicts. As a man of action, as usual, Harry makes some mind-boggling choices and, without apology, dives headfirst into the resulting decisions. Guilt always overwhelms him when faced with the consequences, but he remains unrepentant and never learns from these outcomes. Harry is Harry, which is one of the brighter parts of the series.

Jim Butcher, as an author and worldbuilder, has lessons to impart, especially for aspiring urban fantasy writers like myself. Each aspect of Dresden Lore is meticulously described and realized, as are Harry’s moral conundrums, as are his relationships with others. Sometimes all three manifest into a single plotline. Case in point, in TM, Harry is engaged to a white vampire queen, Lara Raith, while working as the champion of Queen Mab of the Unseelie Court of Faerie, while housing and protecting refugee families, survivors from the Battle of Chicago (BG). He prioritizes, of course, but is wily and diplomatic enough to engage all three above elements into a strategem that results in a positive resolution and saves the day.

Needless to say, I highly recommend this book, as well as this series.
