A friend of mine, Francine Roche Kay, suggested that I read up on Critical Theory, contending that I’ll become a better reader and reviewer in the process. So here’s my first step–my first book–in the process, Introducing Critical Theory: A Graphic Guide.
In literature, Critical Theory is “a social, historical, and political school of thought and philosophical perspective which centers on analyzing and challenging systemic power relations in society, arguing that knowledge, truth, and social structures are fundamentally shaped by power dynamics between dominant and oppressed groups.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_theory)
What does this mean to me exactly?
I’ll read, find out, and then share my conclusions.
This will be the first book that I read on Critical Theory.
So I think understanding LitTheory will do the following: 1. Make you a better reader 2. Make you a better writer 3. Make you a better teacher 4. Make you grow as you will start to see things outside your normal lens and give other philosophies a chance to see how narrow or wide your own worldview was. And it doesn't just apply to books. It applies to music, to movies, to theater, to food, to art. In essence, it applies to everything life throws at you.
