Another book I will begin reading is Mutants & Masterminds Deluxe Hero's Handbook by contributors Jon Leitheusser, Steve Kenson, Seth Johnson, Leon Chang, and Christopher McGlothlin. It is the core rulebook for a tabletop role-playing game of the same name. I play RPGs, and I tried GMing a few years ago—I failed quite spectacularly—but I find myself happy and satisfied with creating characters and playing along via a Game Master’s plan.
A colleague of mine approached me about a week ago with an idea for a learning opportunity for students at our school. He envisioned something about heroes and villains; I added that students should write about such concepts. Just for some background information, my district is following a lesson plan framework this year, provided by an outside corporation. This “framework” welcomes and supports any unconventional ideas that promote student learning from staff members.
When my colleague brought this to my attention, I immediately thought about RPGs. I looked up one dealing with superheroes and found M&M. The first thing we plan to do is to read through the core rulebook, then write up a prospectus, and submit it to our administration.
I’ll let you know my thoughts when I finish this book, as usual.
